The National Geographic Institute is announcing the 1st “Earth, My Planet in Space” with the aim of introducing young people to the scientific and technical activities carried out at the National Geographic Institute, specifically at the Yebes Observatory (Guadalajara). The contest aims to encourage interest in scientific and technical careers, as well as to recognize and highlight talented young people, teachers, and their schools, fostering scientific curiosity in these fields.

RULES

   

PARTICIPANTS

All public, charter, and/or private schools located in Spain that offer official degrees regulated by the Organic Law on Education are eligible to participate, with participation limited to 5th and 6th grade students in elementary school.

TOPIC AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Entries may be submitted in the following formats: a drawing, a painting, a model, or a video. All entries must be related to the following areas:

  • Astronomy.
  • Earth observation.
  • Space Observation.

Entries must meet the following requirements to be accepted:

  • Original and unpublished works.
  • The language will be Spanish.
  • It will be presented one project per class jointly.

Regarding the formats, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Drawing, Painting:
    1. Any technique and style.
    2. Drawings that are copied from others are not permitted.
  2. Model:
    1. Any materials (playdough, cardboard, recyclable materials, etc.).
    2. Any technique or style.
  3. Video:
    1. The video will be no longer than 120 seconds.
    2. The video formats supported are MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, FLV, or MPEG.
    3. Resolution in landscape format (1920x1080 px).
    4. Resolution in portrait orientation (1080x1920 px).

SUBMITTING WORK

Physical entries (drawings, paintings, and models) must be sent to the following address: Observatorio de Yebes, Cerro del Palera S/N, 19141, Yebes, Guadalajara. Specifying «I Concurso La Tierra, mi planeta en el espacio»

In addition to mailing the package, In addition to mailing the package, you must notify info_yebes@oan.es especificando en el asunto «I Concurso La Tierra, mi planeta en el espacio» via email, including the subject line the following information about the authors:

  • Title of the submitted work.
  • Name of the School.
  • Address.
  • Contact phone number.
  • The course and class in which the work was created.

If you are submitting a digital work (video), please submit it exclusively in digital format to the email address provided or via a download link.

The personal data you submit will be processed in accordance with current regulations, specifically the EU General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679) April 27, 2016. The data collected via email will be treated confidentially, will not be permanently stored, and is intended solely for use in this contest.

The artwork must be submitted unsigned, and an envelope must be included with the artwork containing the names of the participants, the class they are in, their school, and a contact phone number.

Once the artwork has been received, the organization will send an email confirming receipt.

The artwork will not be returned to the schools.

DEADLINES

The deadline for submitting entries is May 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Madrid time.

SELECTION PROCESS

The jury will consist of individuals from organizations with professional ties to the fields of astronomy and Earth observation. Entries will be evaluated based on:

  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • Use of new technologies and digital content
  • Adaptation of the educational curriculum

No member of the jury, nor any of their relatives, may participate in this contest.

The jury may disqualify an entry if it determines that the entrant has acted unlawfully or in bad faith toward the IGN or third parties, or that the entry damages the IGN’s reputation.

It is an absolute requirement that the submitted works have not won any prizes in other competitions. If, prior to the announcement of the results of this competition, a submitted work wins a prize in another competition, this must be reported immediately and in writing to the jury.

AWARDS

A first prize consists of educational materials valued at €600, and the winners will also be invited to visit the Yebes Observatory, where they will have the opportunity to tour the facilities and learn about the projects being carried out there.

A second prize consisting of educational materials valued at €300 will be awarded, and the winners will also be taken on a tour of the Yebes Observatory, where they will have the opportunity to visit the facilities and learn about the projects being carried out there.

Either prize may not be awarded if the jury so decides.

Winners will be notified by email and phone well in advance.

In the event that, for any reason, the winners are unable to accept the prize, decline it, or cannot be located, the prize will be awarded to the next alternate winner selected, and the previous winner will forfeit their right to claim the prize.

Once the winners have accepted the prize, they agree to strictly follow the instructions provided for its delivery.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS AND AWARDS CEREMONY

The winning entries will be announced by July 1, 2026, at a public event and through a post on the website and social media. The organizers will contact the school using the contact information provided.

PROPERTY

The IGN reserves the right to publish information about the winning entries on the IGN website; these entries will also be displayed at the Yebes Observatory (…), always crediting the authors of the works and without being obligated to pay royalties to their owners.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Failure by any of the authors to comply with any of these rules will result in the automatic disqualification of the work in question.

Participation in this contest implies acceptance of and compliance with each and every one of its rules. The interpretation of these rules, as well as any other matter relating to the contest, shall be at the discretion of the jury, whose decision shall be final.

JURISDICTION AND GOVERNING LAW

These Terms and Conditions shall be interpreted and governed in accordance with Spanish law. For any dispute arising from the existence, access, use, or content of these Terms and Conditions, the participant and IGN expressly waive any other jurisdiction to which they might be entitled and submit to the exclusive jurisdiction and competence of the Courts and Tribunals of Madrid.
