Sunrise
We define sunrise as the moment when the upper edge of the Sun grazes a hypothetical horizon where the surface of the Earth is idealized, without accounting for mountains and other irregularities, as well as neglecting any nearby objects (houses, trees) or the presence of clouds or fog.
The real sunrise in a given location can take place several minutes later if the surface of the Earth has irregularities towards the horizon. This can lead to the impression that the Sun has not risen yet when the astronomical sunrise in the sense generally accepted (and considered in our tables) has taken place.
Sunset
We define sunset as the moment when the upper edge of the Sun disappears on a hypothetical horizon where the surface of the Earth is idealized, without accounting for mountains and other irregularities, as well as neglecting any nearby objects (houses, trees) or the presence of clouds or fog.
The real sunset in a given location can take place several minutes earlier if the surface of the Earth has irregularities towards the horizon. This can lead to the impression that the Sun has already set when the astronomical sunset in the sense generally accepted (and considered in our tables) has not yet taken place.
